Chapter 8
“We’ll have to leave soon.” Alicia watched as Andrea picked at her food. “It’s all right if you still want to trust her. Maybe you still can.”
Andrea looked up. “It’s just so much more complicated than I thought. She sounded like she was going to let the people go. But I get the feeling she still wants to go after your father and The Company. I’m just wondering at what cost?”
“Listen, I know somewhat how you’re feeling.” Andrea looked her in the eyes. “It’s not the same, but I really did admire my stepfather. But he’s betraying me and he can’t even see it. He’s putting revenge before anything else. Maybe that’s what is happening with Gina.”
Andrea shrugged. “All I know is that she’s not the same person that I met twenty years ago. Something happened, besides her saving me. Something before she saved me. And I think it’s coming back to haunt her.”
“Did you say twenty years ago?” Alicia’s eyes widened in thought as Andrea nodded. “My stepbrother was killed twenty years ago. I was only seven at the time. The weird thing about it, they had him cremated.”
“What’s so weird about that?” Andrea looked a little confused. To her, it was no big deal whether a person was buried or cremated.
“Henry is really into traditions. There’s a family cemetery in Portland. All of his family is buried there.” Alicia thought for a moment. “Henry supposedly spread Fredrick’s ashes in the cemetery, but still. It’s not the same as the family tradition of being buried with the others.”
“You’re not trying to put a connection with Gina and Henry, are you?” Andrea sat back and tried to put her thoughts in order. “Although, it would make some sense. Gina seemed upset that she couldn’t save my father. She told me that saving people is what she did. Maybe she couldn’t save your stepbrother.”
“You feel like doing some digging?” Alicia asked, already knowing the answer.
“What exactly do you have in mind?” Andrea smiled a small smile. The detective thing was definitely her thing.
“If we can maybe find a connection between Henry and Gina, it could explain his possible vendetta...” Alicia shrugged as she trailed off.
“And that would be why Gina has never let go either.” Andrea quickly stood up. “If Gina thought that Henry would never give up on his vendetta, she would try almost anything to stop him. Maybe that’s what the kidnaping was all about.”
“Only one way to find out. We need information and access to a computer.” Alicia stood up as well. Both headed for the door. “I’m thinking library.”

The same group of men was once again sitting around the large oval table. James was standing at the window, looking at the bustling city. All the civilians who had no idea what happened in the city. Especially not what happened after the sun sank in the west. The group of eleven men, including himself, was waiting for confirmation.
The knock on the door they had all been anticipating for nearly an hour occurred.
